Dunes of Despair bonus
I'm working on my Tyrian exploration title and I need a whole lot of the bonus area, especially away form the main fort. I decided to try a hench group, as I remember at 2 mins to go the monsters stop coming. I was paying attention to the gates to the outside as I went to kill the enemy ghostly hero. I noticed that a few seconds after I attacked, not killed, the hero, that the gates opened. I immediately rushed back, hoping the monsters would not come so I can explore at my leisure. But the mosters started to come as usual so I rushed back and killed the hero. Afterwards, I thought about what had happened. What happens if you don't kill the enemy hero after 10 mins is over? Do you lose the mission (which I think happens ), or do you get to keep going until the hero dies?
Please help, and don't tell me things like; change to necromancer (im warrior/ranger at the moment, almost never, ever change (I'm working on a warrior/ranger hammer troll farming build so I never, ever have to change at all )), and get necrotic traversal or whatever.

The way I did it (with a Me/N) was to take out the Hero, then the first 4 pairs of forgotten, then head off to the bonus area. I didn't trust NT for doing it because most of the time you can't get a scarab in range to use it anyway.
With no running skills, it took me 3 or 4 times (I'm thinking 3, tho. was a while ago.) to get it all uncovered. Ususally it was the scarabs that got me - especially on that eastern section - before the hero died. With running skills, you can get a lot, if not all of it uncovered in 1 shot this way. Just ignore the scarabs and remember that the bridge to the SW fort is actually down, even if it doesn't look like it.

Just switch to a Necro secondary and use necrotic traversal. I've NEVER had a problem finding a corpse to use and I've done this with 7 characters and helped many friends do the same. It does help to have a longbow. Basically you don't attack the enemy hero but instead just run up to the left of the back gate. Target a foe and kill it, then use necrotic traversal. You'll have all the time you need to explore since the timer doesn't.

Check the Tyrian Explorer's League Subforum. There are at least two threads there with various strategies on how to do the dunes bonus.

Ok, I'll try that and see how it goes. I have lots of warrior running skills anyway.

Marty: the problem is you can't tell YOUR hero to stand back, and he'll eventually get killed.
I've henched the bonus in Dunes, and also explored it fully with henches - my suggestion is that you use *exactly*, to a T, the strategy suggested in Guildwiki. At the point where Guildwiki suggests you attack the enemy generals you can sprint off and explore for about 2 minutes before your hero comes under attack. You may have to rinse and repeat a couple of times, and you will need running skills (as the hidden area to the east is _big_), but it can be done without using necromancer skills.

Seriously how hard is it to switch back from being a Necromancer secondary. You can always switch back to your Hammer Ranger Troll Farming Build within 2 minutes. Its not like it will cost anything or any runes for that matter.

Have 1 monk be Life Barrier Bonder and stick around protecting the ghost. Then the rest of you go out and pwn.

I have done both the NT jump and the "4 minute mad dash" with henchies. The end result was more or less the same across all of my characters.
The best NT route is with several people (explained on Wiki and other sites). That way maximizes your explorer time as there is no timer at all and no risk of death as you have a full party outside the wall. Ask for some guildie help.
Good luck on your mapping!

Well, I don't know about him, but I don't want to exploit, even when it's for something as pointless as exploring for explorations sake. I don't use the back route in Gyala Hatchery mission either.

Yes but the point is that:
1) Don't want to have to swap for anything
2) Don't want to rely on exploits to get something I will be proud of
3) I don't want to buy that skill for a one time use. (Don't tell me that I'm just saying this because I'm low on money, I have like, 50k)

I got a Guildie Group for our Leader who wanted to explore it (I tagged along for same reason), we managed to tell the hero to stay on the bridge, he never came in to the last area. NT and a few rebirths later and the exploring began.
Now I hear what you are all saying about it being an exploit of the mission but if you have done the mission and the bonus, then you actually have done what you needed. Exploring should never be rushed, when you start rushing it you start skipping places
Well I cleared out just about all the big areas left in Southern Shiver Peaks last night Ice Floe was "fun", henchies REALLY need to learn to heal properly!!!
I now have a few minor wall crawling bits I need to complete and then finish lornars pass. I am seriously hoping that what remains will net me the 1,7% i require... Only time will tell though
